Gloucester City are thrilled to announce that former Morcambe and Newport County captain Aaron Wildig will be joining the club as player/coach for the coming season.
Aaron, 33, is a vastly experienced central midfielder, having began his career at Cardiff City in 2009 where he made 21 appearances when the Bluebirds were playing in the Championship.
After a spell at Shrewsbury, he moved to Morcambe where he amassed 248 appearances and scored 25 goals, becoming captain for the Shrimps after winning promotion to League One.
He then joined Newport County where he was made team captain last season before departing the Exiles after 90 appearances to join City.
On joining City, Aaron said: ‘I’ve got to know Daf over the last 18 months or so at Newport and we spoke about the opportunity to come here and start to move into coaching so I’m really pleased to be here. First and foremost I am here as a footballer so I will be looking to bring my experience and leadership and help the team out next season from midfield. Gloucester are a big club at this level, so I hope the fans can get behind us and we can have a successful season.’
Manager Daf Williams said: ‘I’m delighted to get this one over the line, to have someone of Aaron’s calibre and experience is a huge statement, and a credit to the way the club is being run now. He was statistically the best midfielder in league two last season before his injury, so make no mistake we have got a great player on our hands and he will be bringing his experience into a coaching role too.’
