Can we do it on a cold Tuesday night in Basingstoke? ‘Yes, we can’ is the resounding answer to that particular question as City ran out worthy 2-0 winners on Tuesday evening thanks to an impressive second half display.
Both goals came from Kane Simpson, with his second being an audacious long-range effort as he spotted the home ‘keeper straying off his line.
“After a bit of a tussle with the defender, it gave me a chance to look up as I was getting back to my feet,” he explained. “The other defender dropped off and with my rich run of form at the moment, I fancied myself to beat the ‘keeper from there and the risk paid off!
“It was nice to see the ball sail into the net for our crucial second goal. I feel like I’ve been getting back up to speed these last couple of weeks; it felt good out there on Tuesday evening and I was happy with my performance and, of course, the two goals.
“Overall, everyone performed well on the night and it was a dominant display.
“I’m settling in well here; everyone has made me feel welcome, which always makes it easy to settle in and get on with my stuff on the pitch.
“The group is very talented and to be playing under a manager with a lot of knowledge, I can’t help but feel that this is going to be a successful season for us.
“We’ve put ourselves into a good position heading into a busy period, but it counts for nothing if we don’t continue this momentum when we return to home action on Saturday and then Tuesday.”
The City supporters have really taken to Simpson, with his all-action style and natural goalscoring instincts.
“The fans are always a massive part for us, they’ve been brilliant with me since I joined the club,” he added. “You can hear them loudly throughout every game and it really pushes the boys on, especially in difficult times!
“They have such a big role to play and we need them turning up in good numbers for these forthcoming home games.
“We know the ability we have in the changing room and the key thing is to be able to maintain the high standards that we have set and follow the game plan that is set out for us.
“If we can do that, I’m sure we will be where we want to come the end of the season.”
You heard the man, come and show your support at the KMM Energy Stadium on Saturday as we play host to Chertsey Town (kick-off 3pm).
