Defender Ben Richards-Everton departs the club due to personal reasons

Gloucester City AFC regret to say that we can confirm that Ben Richards-Everton has departed the club with immediate effect due to personal reasons.

Richards-Everton has been managing ongoing knee injury issues over an extended period, something that has required significant time, treatment and careful consideration around his future in the game. After discussions with the club, Ben has taken the difficult decision to step away at this time in order to prioritise his long-term health and personal well-being.

The centre-back initially joined the club in the summer of 2023 under the management of Tim Flowers, before departing in March of the same season. He later returned in the summer of 2024 following the appointment of Mike Cook, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter in the City backline.

After the managerial change to Dafydd Williams, the experienced centre-back retained his place in defence and continued to play a key role both on the pitch and within the dressing room.

"I have been struggling with a knee injury now for the past three seasons that I have been managing behind closed doors." said Richards-Everton.

"I have had lengthy conversations with not only people at the club but my family and I have come to the decision that it is best to walk away from football at the minute.

"I want to say a massive thank you to everyone at Gloucester City Football Club, I want to say thank you to the management team, my teammates and you especially you fans. You have been behind me since I walked through the door. Hopefully we will have something to celebrate at the end of the season by getting that promotion that we all want.

"Up the Tigers!"

"To say I’m gutted that Ben will be departing is an understatement." said Manager Daf Williams. "He’s a fantastic person first and foremost, but also a top professional who’s given me personally since arriving in the summer, and this football club over the last couple of years, absolutely everything.

"I’ve loved working with him and it’s a great shame that time has been cut short. Some things in life are far more important than football and I have the utmost respect for Ben and his decision. He has had a great contribution both on and off the pitch during my time at the club, and for that I thank him.

"This is no doubt an incredibly difficult decision for Ben, and we will support him in any way possible. I can’t speak highly enough of him in regards to his honesty, integrity, and character throughout this decision making process and that’s something we as a club should be extremely grateful for. It goes without saying that Ben will always be welcome at Gloucester City AFC."

Throughout his time with the club, the 34-year-old has conducted himself with the upmost professionalism. His commitment on the pitch, leadership within the dressing room and willingness to support those around him have made him a highly respected figure among teammates, staff and supporters alike.

While his departure is for personal reasons, the club fully supports his decision and respects the challenges he has faced in managing his injury. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Ben for his efforts, dedication and contribution during his time here.

Everyone at the club wishes Ben the very best moving forward and thanks him for his service.

Thank you Ben Richards-Everton!
