Olympic medallist and successful businessman, Steve Rowbotham, joins Gloucester City AFC as an Executive Director to assist Patrick Chambers and the club’s leadership team in their goal to achieve Football League status.
Born and bred in Gloucestershire and a lifelong sports fan, Steve Rowbotham has spent the last 11 years proving what an elite mindset and winning culture can achieve in the world of business. Prior to that, Steve represented his country and was part of the most successful era of British Rowing. Over a decade long career competing for Great Britain, he won over 20 world medals which culminated in a Bronze Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as being part of the London 2012 Games.
Now running his own technology business in travel, Steve returns to his true passion in the world of sport. Having played almost every sport which involved hitting a ball growing up, Steve represented Gloucestershire at tennis and always had the ambition of competing on the world stage. But it wasn’t until he picked up rowing at university that he found his true calling, and was able to test himself against the best in the world over an 11-year professional career.
It was his mindset and ability to work out how to win which enabled him to be so successful and it is this mindset which he intends to bring to the Gloucester City AFC set up to help them achieve their ambitions.
‘When I first spoke to Patrick it was clear that we are both ambitious people and want to win,’ said Steve. ‘It was important to be part of something that means a lot to me, and not only do I get to impact the club, its supporters and the community, I get to do this in a place where I grew up and love so much’. I am grateful for the opportunity Patrick has given me and to be able to make a significant impact at the club. I am young enough, and have enough energy, to dedicate part of my time to seeing what is possible within an ambitious set up and believe with the team we are forming it will be a very exciting era for the club’.
Steve will remain in his current role running his business whilst taking this position at the club but commits to giving his all to achieve success on and off the pitch with the intention of building something special. You won’t be able to miss him at home games – standing at 6 ft 5 inches tall and with the intention of being the most vocal home supporter, he is very much looking forward to working with Patrick, Tim Flowers, and the rest of the Gloucester AFC family to see what they can achieve together.
