A point against the Pilgrims

Gloucester City maintained their position at the top of the National League North with a goalless draw against Boston United.
City’s best chance of the game fell to Alex Whittle in the second half, but the wing-back's low driven effort struck the outside of the Boston post.
The visitors had a number of chances of their own including long ranged efforts from Jordan Thewlis and Connor Dimaio, but Rhys Lovett stood strong all evening to ensure a clean sheet.
City were bolstered by the return of Alex Whittle and Kevin Dawson, but Gavin Gunning missed out on a place in the squad through injury. Lovett also returned to the starting XI in place of Louie Moulden.
The Tigers made a bright start, but the first clear cut chance of the game fell to the visitors. Connor Dimaio made room on the edge of the box and fired a low curling effort towards goal, but Rhys Lovett was quickly down to save.
City’s first chance of the game fell to Tahvon Campbell in the 12th minute. Bernard Mensah’s long throw glanced off a Boston head, but Campbell was denied a poacher's finish by the onrushing United goalkeeper.
In the 36th minute, Campbell latched onto a loose ball and raced through on goal, only to be brought down by United captain, Shiels. The referee produced a yellow for the Boston defender and Lewis Brunt’s subsequent free-kick drifted narrowly over the bar.
The first chance in the second half fell to Kevin Dawson after an impressive run down the right by Jack James. The City wing-back made room to cross for Dawson, but the City midfielder’s riffled effort was blocked and Boston were able to clear.
James continued to be an attacking threat and City were crying out for penalty in the 55th minute when he was brought down by the Boston keeper. An advantage was played as Alex Whittle picked up the ball on the edge of the box, but his low driven strike cannoned off the outside of the post and the game remained goalless.
In the 72nd minute, substitute Jordan Thewlis raced through on goal after a defensive mix-up but his powerful shot sailed over the cross bar.
Tommy O’Sullivan had a chance five minutes later after some clever interplay between the City forward line. Campbell flicked on a header for Brunt who then found O’Sullivan on the overlap, but his left footed effort flew over the cross bar.
Both sides tirelessly pushed for a winning goal as the clock ticked towards 90, but it would end honours even between two of the league’s promotion contenders.
It was a much-deserved point for Lovett and the City defence who battled hard all evening to ensure a first home clean sheet of the season.
City remain top of the National League North and are next in action on December 12th against Curzon Ashton.
