Rene Howe’s late double saw Gloucester City defeated by Sky Bet League Two side Newport County at Cinderford in their third pre-season friendly.\r\n\r\nCity had been the more impressive heading into the half-time break but after a bevy of substitutions around the hour mark the Exiles’ strength in-depth showed.\r\n\r\nThe deadlock was broken in the 74th minute with Howe caressing home from six yards and then with five minutes remaining the ex-Torquay United man rounded Harvey Rivers to seal the victory.\r\n\r\nGloucester manager Tim Harris, who has enjoyed a long association with Newport, can be pleased with his Tigers team who enjoyed plenty of possession and threatened against a strong Exiles line-up.\r\n\r\nIt had been City who started the stronger with Scott Wilson almost latching onto Matt Groves’ teasing ball into the area with the first sniff at goal.\r\n\r\nThe young striker, re-signed from Bath City in the summer, then saw his attempt from distance well covered by Lenny Pidgeley.\r\n\r\nHarris’ side continued to push with Adam Mann bundling the ball towards goal, forcing Ismael Yakubu to clear off the line.\r\n\r\nFormer Tigers star Joe Parker had the chance to score but the youngster sliced wide from 10 yards out after a decent build-up with Christian Jolley.\r\n\r\nJolley’s opportunity came shortly after as the striker rifled his effort inches over Mike Green’s crossbar after Wilson had a well struck attempt stopped by Pidgeley at the other end.\r\n\r\nComing out for the second period Newport began strong as only a heroic goal-line block from Spencer Hamilton denied Jolley an opener.\r\n\r\nCity were riding their luck as defender Michael Green now had to be the hero to clear Lee Minshull’s bullet header off the line.\r\n\r\nThe chances kept coming for the Welsh side, Parker unleashing a strong effort saved down low by Green; this was Parker’s last action of the game as the match was turned on its head with Newport bringing on seven substitutes at once.\r\n\r\nHowe threatened almost immediately with a quick turn and shot just missing the top left hand corner of the City goal, followed by former Forest Green man Yan Klukowski poking wide from a cross.\r\n\r\nThe inevitable occurred in the 74th minute with Howe tapping home easily from six yards out from Ryan Jackson’s low cross on the right for the lead.\r\n\r\nThe Exiles kept pressing and were rewarded with five minutes to go as Howe latched onto a great through-ball from deep to score the clincher.\r\n\r\nGloucester City: M.
