Brislington 0-1 Gloucester City XI\r\n\r\nTeenager Sam Turl’s 72nd minute strike secured a mostly inexperienced Gloucester City side their first victory in pre-season action against Western Premier League side Brislington.\r\n\r\nIn a tepid encounter against the South Bristol outfit, manager Dave Mehew played a predominantly triallist eleven, with only Matt Coupe and Joe Parker from the recognised first team squad taking part.\r\n\r\nBright sparks for the youthful Tigers’ include fullbacks Lewis Binns and Ryan Batten, who impressed down both wings throughout the encounter.\r\n\r\nOn yet another beautiful evening during the current heatwave, a first half with little action took place with only a half chance from substitute Mitch Purnell troubling either goal.\r\n\r\nThe second half was a different story with a flurry of chances pounding ex-City keeper Chris Humphries early in the Brislington goal, but Joe Tumulty’s final effort was lacking.\r\n\r\nBrislington’s best effort of the game came a minute later with Alex Lambert’s header smacking against the crossbar after a knock in from Liam Andrews.\r\n\r\nBatten was impressive down the right hand side and a delicious cross managed to deceive everyone in the box, including the City players.\r\n\r\nThen came the breakthrough, a storming run and cross from Hartpury student Binns found Turl in the middle who managed to knock the ball into the bottom left corner to put City into the lead.\r\n\r\nThe goal opened up the contest even more, with City attacking with extra intent, and after good interplay between Turl and Liam Antonio Williams, only a nice save forced the shot wide.\r\n\r\nThe Western Premier League outfit kept on coming, but a tidy clearance from Nathan Perkins thwarted Mitch Ashmond in the area.\r\n\r\nDanny Campbell, who was a handful upfront for City, played in Binns but the fullback saw his shot sail wide.\r\n\r\nLate chances for Antonio Williams and Kieron Mace failed to trouble Humphries as the game fizzled out into a good victory for Dave Mehew’s men.\r\n\r\nBrislington: C.
