Gloucester City manager Dave Mehew has dubbed his current squad as ‘the best team’ he’s ever had heading into the 2013/14 Skrill North season.\r\n\r\nThe Tigers will head up to Humberside on Saturday to face newcomers North Ferriby United followed by a grudge match against rivals Worcester City in the first home game on Tuesday.\r\n\r\nAfter a mammoth pre-season, Mehew and his squad are raring to go.\r\n\r\n“We’ve got to be pleased, this is the biggest squad I’ve ever had and we’ve got the best team I’ve ever had,” Mehew said after Monday’s 1-1 draw against Bishops Cleeve.\r\n\r\n“Generally pre-season has gone well and there is competition for places and if they aren’t doing the job, they won’t be playing.\r\n\r\n“There are players who have been regulars who will now be fighting for their shirt which is the message I want to get over and we’ll see where we go from there.”\r\n\r\nThe injection of attacking signings Matt Groves and Scott Wilson, the coup of attracting Jamie Edge to the club and the acquisition of Ryan Batten as defensive cover has seen the squad strengthen from 2012/13, but Mehew knows it will take a while for the squad to gel.\r\n\r\n“To improve, it’s going to be hard as we’ve been playing a new system, a new way, but we’ve coped very well and the proof will be in the pudding on Saturday,” the former Bristol Rovers man admitted.\r\n\r\n“It’s a long season and Rome won’t be built or ended in a day so we’re going there with hope and expectation after the preseason we’ve had.”\r\n\r\nThe trip to North Ferriby will be one into the unknown; the Tigers have never played on Humberside.\r\n\r\n“It’s going to be hard, we don’t know too much about them but it’s going to be difficult because they’re a team who will be solid and we’ll see how we get on.\r\n\r\n“We’ve done well away in the first game in the last couple of seasons and we just need to make sure we’re in the game at half time and then go from there.”\r\n\r\nYou’ll be able to catch full coverage of North Ferriby United v Gloucester City on Severn Sport, on Twitter (@GCAFCofficial) and Facebook (GCAFCofficial) sites from 3pm Saturday.\r\n\r\nBoris was also interviewed last night by Tigers TV interviewer Neil Phelps, which you can view below.\r\n\r\n
