Match Report

A superb second half fight back saw Gloucester City defeat Evesham United 3-1 at the Spires and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium.\r\nThe home side had initially took the lead just before half time when Neil Barnfield’s shot was deflected and landed at the feet of Carl Brown. The striker powered his shot beyond Mike Green into the bottom left hand corner.\r\nGloucester’s best chance of the first half came after good play down the right from Scott Wilson. His cross was met by Darren Mullings who forced John Bateman into a point blank save. The keeper got up quickly to stop Lewis Hogg’s effort from crossing the line.\r\nHalf time substitute Joe Parker sparked Gloucester into life, just seconds into the second half after dribbling down the left and firing a low shot which was well saved by Bateman. From the resulting corner, a rash clearance from an Evesham defender saw the ball bounce on the top of the cross-bar twice, before the ball was eventually cleared.\r\nHowever just minutes later Gloucester equalised when Parker slid through the lively Wilson who slotted the ball calmly into the bottom right hand corner.\r\nParker and Wilson both tested Bateman again, who comfortably saved their attempts from outside the box.\r\nCity took the lead after Parker collected captain Matt Coupe’s defensive header and dribbled past two defenders before rounding the keeping and slotting into an empty net.\r\nEvesham’s Marcus Jackson’s cross field ball was cut out by Wilson, who laid the ball to substitute Matt Liddiard. His well-placed shot was heading towards the top right hand corner but was spectacularly saved by Bateman.\r\nThe hosts pushed for an equaliser, and Thomas John was denied by a fine save by Mike Green in the Gloucester goal after the midfielder received the ball on the edge of the box from a corner and struck the ball hard and low. Brown also came close after his turn and shot went just wide from seven yards.\r\nWith time ticking away, Gloucester wrapped things up when Will Morford scored a well-deserved goal after more good play from Parker and Wilson.\r\n\r\nAttendance: 154\r\nEvesham United Starting Line Up: John Bateman (GK), Marcus Jackson, Jared Wilson, James Lonely, Matt Sysum, Mitchell Botfield, Matt Williams, Neil Barnfield, Marcus Palmer, Carl Brown, Michael Tambling.\r\nSubstitutes: Andre Rodrigues, Reece Denton, Josh Gould, Matt McGee, Thomas John, Tim Clarke (GK)\r\nGloucester City Starting Line Up: Mike Green (GK), Michael Green, Tyler Weir, Matt Coupe, Tom Hamblin, Tom Webb, Darren Mullings, Jamie Edge, Will Morford, Scott Wilson, Lewis Hogg\r\nSubstitutes: Matt Liddiard, Joe Parker, Neil Mustoe, Nathan Phillips (GK)\r\n\r\nReport by Bradley Poole
