Jackson strike seals first win of the season

Marc Richards men claimed their first points of the new season with a well-deserved 1-0 win over Oxford City at the Jubilee on Tuesday night.

Jake Jackson’s finish just past the hour mark was enough to see off the visitors, in what was a highly entertaining encounter in City’s opening home game of the season.

Jackson, who was lively all game, got on the end of Joe Parker’s cross to easily slot home. Parker’s introduction late on caused real problems for Oxford on numerous occasions.

Both sides squandered big chances in a thrilling first half, Joe Hanks with the best of the early exchanges with a fantastic free-kick effort, which was well saved by Craig King in the Oxford goal.

Ben Seymour came close on the half-hour mark but saw his effort whistle over the bar.

Moments later, the visitors had their best chance of the half when Matt Paterson’s shot looked to be creeping into the right-hand corner, only for Yates to make a stunning save to deny the Oxford forward.

Just minutes later, Paterson had a second opportunity, once again unable to beat Yates, with the City keeper tipping the ball over the top of the bar.

The action picked up where it left off in the second half, Joe Hanks’ stunning 30-yard pile driver almost found the net.

City must have been thinking it was not going to be their day when Mawford saw his effort crash off the bar. Another chance went begging.

But just past the hour-mark, City found their first goal of the new season.

Substitute Joe Parker provided the spark with a wonderful cross which was turned home by Jackson.

Heading into the final quarter of the game, with both sides having put so much into the first hour, the intensity seemed to die down.

The visitors best chance to equalise fell to Paterson, but the striker dragged his shot well wide.

The Tigers remained well organised and frustrated the away side as they sealed their first points of the new season.
