Stanley (Stan) MYERS\r\n\r\nUndoubtedly one of the greatest players in the history of the football club, Stan Myers was the ultimate gentleman both on and off the pitch.\r\n\r\nFor over a half century, the Lancashire born right half was our record appearance holder with 413 appearances, before current City stalwart Tom Webb broke the record, with Myers watching shortly before his death, in 2010.\r\n\r\nMyers’ played in one of the most glorious eras of the football club, winning five trophies, reaching the FA Cup First Round three times and being one of  the scorers in the famous victory over Tottenham Hotspur in front of the club’s all-time record attendance of 10,500.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nIn an era where Gloucester City drew thousands each week, Myers was truly the man.\r\n\r\nBorn 19/03/1929 in Ulverston, Myers joined the Royal Air Force before spells at Charlton Athletic and Millwall, where he failed to secure first-team recognition.\r\n\r\nCity Manager Doug Hunt decided to bring Myers in, with the recommendation of other Millwall newcomer Jackie Elliott, and the rest was history.\r\n\r\nMyers went on to make 413 appearances over the next decade, forming a formidable partnership with City Hall of Famer Frank Tredgett.\r\n\r\nMany of the matches the two spearheaded have entered City folklore, including the 1954/55 Southern League Cup Final where the Tigers came back from 4-1 down in the first leg, to win 5-1 against Yeovil Town in front of a rapturous Longlevens crowd.\r\n\r\nOne of the most universally popular players in the club’s history, on the day which Webb broke the appearance record, against Chelmsford City in November 2010, Myers smiled widely throughout and muttered to members of the club nearby, ‘this is absolutely marvellous, absolutely marvellous.’\r\n\r\nA little over a month later, on Boxing Day 2010; Myers passed away.\r\n\r\nOn his grave, at the Crematorium in Coney Hill, a huge Gloucester City badge is emblazoned on the back with the simple message: ‘413 Appearances’.\r\n\r\nA true legend.\r\n\r\n
