Tigers defender Matt Coupe reckons his team’s improved performances are his highlight of his first full season with Gloucester City.\r\n\r\nMatt, who won a handful of U21 and non-league caps in his younger days, is returning to the town where his mother grew up for the final fixture of the season.\r\n\r\nThe tough tackling defender explained: “All my Welsh family are from Colwyn Bay and Llandudno, so they’ll all be there, all my mum’s family are from that area so I expect to see all my aunties, uncles and cousins.”\r\n\r\nAnd although Matt,  who includes Aberystwyth among his former teams, has not played at Colwyn Bay before, he admits he may have to wait a while longer as he struggles to recover from a foot injury picked up against Guiseley earlier this month.\r\n\r\nAfter joining the Tigers midway through last season Matt said he thought the team could be proud of its achievements in its third season in the Blue Square Bet North but there was room for improvement.\r\n\r\nHe said: “It’s hard to pick a personal highlight so for me it’s seeing the team improve. I know I tipped us to be pushing for play offs back in December, if we hadn’t had the injuries and suspensions we had that would’ve been realistic.\r\n\r\n”We’ve shown we can do it against some of the big teams, we just need to be consistent. All the teams at the top of the table they go out and do it every single week. We need to be solid and strong because that’s where we can come undone sometimes.”\r\n\r\nMatt, who won Supporters’ Player of the Season last year, said he was pleased to hand the trophy over to this year’s winner Will Morford.\r\n\r\nHe said: “Morf has had a good season, he’s really grown into the role and he believes he is a first team striker now but he needs to believe in his own abilities more.\r\n\r\n”In midfield Webby has been great and Darren Mullings, he is so underrated and I want to keep it that way so nobody nabs him.\r\n\r\n”In defence we’ve done well, Mike Green has been outstanding at right back and Sam Rawlings will be a fantastic right back, defensively he is excellent, he just needs to be a bit more composed on the ball.\r\n\r\n”Then there is Manny, he has ability without doubt. When he believes how good he is he’ll be even better. He needs to be a bit more arrogant – but he is a real gem for us.”
