GLOUCESTER CITY CLUB INFORMATION
Gloucester City AFC are members of the Southern Football League Premier Division. Managed by ex-Gloucester City goalkeeper Tim Harris and assisted by David Mehew. With a team made up primarily of Gloucester based players, many of whom came through our youth team ranks. City hit the headlines in the 2002 / 2003 season in reaching the quarter finals of the FA Trophy, a feat almost unheard of for a team playing at that time in the Southern League Western Division. Highlights were two superb away wins at Conference sides Woking and Southport, achievements which twice won the club the prestigious Carling Team of the Round award.
Not prepared to sit on their laurels the lads hit the heights in the league the following season finishing runners up in the Southern League Western Division, chasing eventual champions Redditch United to the very last match of the season. This achievement saw the Tigers promoted to the Southern League Premier Division.
With one of the lowest playing budgets in the league and certainly one of the smallest squads of players, many saw City as amongst the favourites for relegation in the 2004 / 2005 season. However, a combination of shrewd management by Chris Burns and his new assistant Keith Knight, coupled with a fantastic spirit amongst the players, saw City defy the critics and secure a position in the Premier League for the 2005 / 2006 season. Meanwhile our Youth Team coaches Kenny Blackburn and Warren Evans steered their young side to the runners up spot in both the league and county cup. With several of the young Tigers already having played in the Southern League despite being under 18 years of age and the creation of new teams going down to Under 12 level the future for the club looks very bright indeed.
The management team of Chris and Keith parted with the club in January 2006. Their replacements were, in the short term, players Neil Mustoe and Adie Harris as caretaker Manager and Assistant manager respectively. Then a week and a half later the management team of Tim Harris and Chris Smith took the reigns. For the start of the 2006/2007 season David Mehew took over the reigns as assistant, following Chris Smith's decision to step down due to personal reasons.
In the summer of 2007 the club suffered the devastating blow of a third major flood, with water reaching the cross-bars. In view of the cost of repairs (none of which is insurable) the club have decided to leave Meadow Park and will be playing the 2007-08 season at Forest Green Rovers - but the club remains committed to a return to Gloucester at the earliest opportunity, and to continue its march to higher-grade football.
If you like to see exciting football played by committed and skilful players in what many people believe to be one of the best atmospheres in the non league, then head to watch Gloucester City. You can be assured of a warm welcome and some excellent entertainment.
