A fortuitous second half goal from Will Morford saw Gloucester City victorious at Bishops Stortford, and in turn, make it their best ever Blue Square Bet North Season.\r\n\r\nMatt Liddiard’s header had cannoned off the striker’s back and past Stortford keeper Carl Pentney into the net after a period of City pressure.\r\n\r\nDarren Edwards had put the Tigers into the lead mid-way through the first half, only for Bill Lobjoit to equalise on the half-time whistle.\r\n\r\nThe Tigers haul of 53 points marks their best ever points total at Blue Square Bet North level, despite six games remaining of the season; a remarkable achievement.\r\n\r\nDave Mehew’s men started aggressively at Woodside Park and were close to taking the lead early, but after good work from Liddiard, Tom Webb shot wide.\r\n\r\nThey continued to press and Lewis Hogg was unlucky after his cross-shot evaded everyone and shot past the back post.\r\n\r\nThe home side had a gilt-edged chance after Steve Cawley had been played in through, but when it came down to the shot, the midfielder sliced the ball wide.\r\n\r\nHowever, City continued to attack the Hertfordshire side’s backline and Morford was extremely unlucky not to reach the ball after a superb ball from Hogg; keeper Pentney had reached it just in time.\r\n\r\nEdwards had a very good opportunity after a brilliant ball from Morford, but the striker blasted wide from close range.\r\n\r\nThen came the breakthrough; a quick corner from Hogg found Danny Andrew who shot down the line, saw his cross cleared only for Morford to head back into the path of Edwards who tapped the ball past the out-coming Pentney.\r\n\r\nThey almost doubled their lead immediately after but Liddiard’s header sailed over the bar.\r\n\r\nThe goal forced Stortford to come back at City, but Lobjoit’s effort from long range was saved well by Mike Green.\r\n\r\nThe home side equalised just before half-time; a lackadaisical backpass from Webb saw Green rush out of goal and blast the ball straight at Lobjoit; only to see the ball nestled into the net.\r\n\r\nCity continued to dominate heading into the second half and Webb, trying to back amends for his error, saw Pentney saved brilliantly twice to deny the club’s all-time appearance holder.\r\n\r\nThe Woodside Park outfit were beginning to catch City on the counter attack and were unlucky after Lobjoit had hacked wide from in-front of goal.\r\n\r\nCity rode out the Stortford attacks and capitalised in the 65th minute.\r\n\r\nAn Andrew cross found the head of Liddiard, a constant threat throughout the game, but the midfielder’s header bounced off Morford’s back past Pentney to put the Tigers back into the lead.\r\n\r\nStortford attempted to come back and save a point, but to no avail as City hung on and now can enjoy their greatest ever season in the Blue Square Bet North; a credit to the players and manager Mehew.\r\n\r\nBishops Stortford: C.
